Genevieve de Jesus Jan 9, 2021 11:52 PM (in response to Elliot Schneider)Thank you. Yes I’ve seen this document in ancestry.com. I am looking for a photograph because we don’t have any pictures of him. My greatgrandmother burned all his photos during world war 1 to avoid being captured

1 person found this helpfulDear Ms. de Jesus,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Records Relating to the Army Music School, Washington Barracks, 1911-1928 in the Records of the Adjutant General’s Office, 1917 - 1985 (Record Group 407) that may contain some information related to your research. These records have not been digitized. Please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at archives2reference@nara.gov for access to and information about these records.
Next, we located the series Numerical Files, 1921-1942 in the Records of the War Department General and Special Staffs (Record Group 165) that contains records related to music and to Special Services Schools, which includes the School of Music. These records are indexed by the series Subject Index to the Series "Numerical Files, 1921-1942" and by the series Name Index to the Series "Numerical Files, 1921-1942" and the Series "Decimal Files, 1942-1948". These records have not been digitized. Please contact RDT2 with any questions you may have about them.
In addition, we located the series Photographs of American Military Activities, ca. 1918 - ca. 1981 in the Records of the Office of the Chief Signal Officer (Record Group 111) that may be of interest to you. Please contact the National Archives at College Park - Still Pictures (RDSS) at stillpix@nara.gov for assistance with these records. When you submit your inquiry, please include as much information about your great grandfather and his military unit as possible, including his first and last name and the unit(s) he served in. For more information, please see Photographs and Graphic Works in College Park, Maryland.
If you have not already done so, we suggest that you request a copy of your great grandfather’s Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and individual medical reports for enlisted men of the U.S. Army who were separated from the service after October 1912 and prior to 1959 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. In many cases where personnel records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, proof of service can be provided from other records such as morning reports, payrolls, and military orders, and a certificate of military service will be issued. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. Attach a copy of his draft card. For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.
Please note that the "official" photograph of an individual is not considered to be a permanent federal record by the respective military services and is not retained in a separate collection by the service. If the photograph you are seeking still exists, it will most likely be found in your great grandfather's Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). However, there is no guarantee the photograph will be present.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2 and RDSS. Also, the NPRC is closed except for emergencies. Currently, NPRC will continue servicing requests ONLY associated with medical treatments, burials, and homeless veterans seeking admittance to a homeless shelter. If your request is urgent, please see Emergency Requests and Deadlines. Please refrain from submitting non-emergency requests such as replacement medals, administrative corrections, or records research until NPRC returns to pre-COVID staffing levels. Please check archives.gov/veterans for updates to the NPRC operating hours and status. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Finally, we suggest that you contact the U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center to see if they can offer you any additional assistance.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
