1 person found this helpfulDear Mr. Johnson,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Records of the 1st through 1111th Aero Squadrons, 1917 - 1919 in the Records of the Army Air Forces (Record Group 18) that includes records of the 8th Aero Squadron. We also located the series Correspondence Relating to Aero Squadrons, 1919 - 1930 (documenting 1917 - 1930) in Record Group 18 and the series Card File of Movements of Aero Squadrons, ca. 1917 - ca. 1919 in the Records of the American Expeditionary Forces (World War I) (Record Group 120) that may contain some information relevant to your research. For information about these records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at archives2reference@nara.gov.
In addition, we identified the series Gorrell's History of the American Expeditionary Forces Air Service, 1917-1919 (Microfilm Publication M990) in Record Group 120 that was compiled by Colonel Edgar S. Gorrell. A descriptive pamphlet for M990 was written that provides a brief description of the contents & volumes and arrangement of the records that may be helpful to you. The pamphlet is available online in NARA’s Microfilm Catalog. Please contact RDT2 with any questions you might have about these records.
Next, we located the series Subject Index to Gorrell's History of the American Expeditionary Forces Air Service, 1917-1919, the series Subject Indexes to Subseries A-P of Gorrell's History of the American Expeditionary Forces Air Service, 1917-1919, and the series Subject Card Index to Cables in Volumes A20, A21, and A22 of Gorrell's History of the American Expeditionary Forces Air Service, 1917-1919 in Record Group 120 that might be of interest to you. These records have not been digitized. For information about and access to them, please contact RDT2.
Plus, we located the series Photographs Made by the Photographic Section, Air Service, AEF, in France and Germany, ca. 3/1918 - ca. 11/1918 in the Records of the Records of the Army Air Forces (Record Group 18) that includes photographs used in Gorrell’s History. There is a Shelf List to this series. These records have not been digitized. Please contact the National Archives at College Park - Still Pictures (RDSS) at stillpix@nara.gov for assistance with these records.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2 and RDSS. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
Finally, M990 has been digitized and is available online via Fold3 as Gorrell's History - AEF Air Service. There may be a fee for using this service. Instead, check for access at your local library as many library systems subscribe to this site, making it free for their patrons.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
