Re: Seeking records of Thomas & Mattie Johnson
Susannah Brooks Dec 3, 2020 1:21 PM (in response to Jaynea Keathley)Because these are very common names, could you please give us the year Thomas Johnson was born and if known the maiden names of Mattie Ruth Johnson and Dorothy Johnson or any other information you know about these people.

Re: Seeking records of Thomas & Mattie Johnson
Jaynea Keathley Dec 3, 2020 2:46 PM (in response to Susannah Brooks)I am not sure what year Thomas Johnson was born. Mattie Ruth's Johnson's maiden name is Glenn. I'm not sure about Dorothy Johnson. Mattie's parents are Woodrow Wilson Glenn and Mattie Ransaw. Mattie Ruth and Thomas Johnson's kids that I know of are Thomas, Yvette, and Marcellus. I am pretty sure they have more but not sure.

Susannah Brooks Dec 4, 2020 11:54 AM (in response to Jaynea Keathley)Your ancestors are really baffling me. Did all the people you listed above remain in South Carolina or move to another state? Also do you have the approximate birth or death year of any of these people?

Re: Seeking records of Thomas & Mattie Johnson
Jaynea Keathley Dec 4, 2020 2:21 PM (in response to Susannah Brooks)Mattie Ruth died in Cleveland Heights in Ohio. That was on May 23 1999, she was born in Alabama on February 28 1944. Thomas Johnson was born on February 15th in South Carolina. I'm not sure of the year. I am pretty sure if his wife Mattie moved to Ohio he did too. I can try and ask my biological aunt more about Dorothy and Corey and get right back with you? They also have a kid named Christopher Johnson. All of their kids are still living.

Re: Seeking records of Thomas & Mattie Johnson
Susannah Brooks Dec 4, 2020 7:36 PM (in response to Jaynea Keathley)The information you sent about Ohio, I think will give me a good start. For instance I found the obituary for Mattie Ruth's father, Woodrow Wilson Glenn, who died in 1975 in Louisville KY and was born in Alabama. This greatly expands the area for looking for records.
from the Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY) 9 Jun 1975
This is the obituary of Thomas Johnson's mother, Dorothy Johnson
from the Augusta GA Chronicle 5 May 1988

Re: Seeking records of Thomas & Mattie Johnson
Susannah Brooks Dec 5, 2020 2:43 PM (in response to Jaynea Keathley)Some additional information.
In researching Allendale County, SC one has to be aware that the county by that name did not exist prior to 1919. It was formed from parts of Barnwell and Hampton Counties SC and the town of Fairfax is still split between Allendale and Hampton.
Thomas Johnson's father was not Corey, but rather Coy Johnson. According to the SSDI he was born 28 Jun 1906 and died Dec 1975. According to his WWII draft card he was born a year later.
Coy and Dorothy (listed as Doris) appear in the 1930 census in Hampton Co SC
In 1920 Dorothy is living with her father Elijah (spelled as Lige) and his wife Ellen (not certain if she is Dorothy's mother, or Elijah's second wife, see death certificates that follow).
According to his death certificate Elijah was 100 years old when he died in 1960. His wife was listed as Ella Hamilton.
It states that he was born in Dorchester Co SC and his parents were Calvin Hamilton and Elbry.
Ella Hamilton died in 1963 and her birth year is listed as 1894 (a lot younger than Elijah and reason I am not certain if she is Dorothy's birth mother). She also was born in Dorchester Co, SC and her parents are listed as James Riley and Dianna Risby.

Re: Seeking records of Thomas & Mattie Johnson
Susannah Brooks Dec 7, 2020 2:33 PM (in response to Jaynea Keathley)Glad I could help you. I found a bit more on Coy Johnson and was able to take that family line back 2 more generations.
1920 US Census Hampton Co SC showing Coy Johnston Johnson age 13 with his father, Prince Johnson age 60, stepmother Hattie (she is much younger than Prince and obviously a 2nd wife), and 6 siblings.
[familysearch.org is a free research site, you just need to sign up for a user name and password]
Prince Johnson died in 1927 and his death certificate lists his parents as Prince Johnson Sr and Henrietta Johnson
In 1880 Prince Johnson jr is living with his father Prince Johnson Sr, age 60, Rosetta, and 2 siblings.
In 1870 Prince Johnson Jr, age 14, is living with his father Prince Johnson Sr. Rosetta, and 3 siblings in Beaufort Co, SC

Re: Seeking records of Thomas & Mattie Johnson
Jaynea Keathley Dec 7, 2020 5:19 PM (in response to Susannah Brooks)Actually, in my tree it shows Coy Johnson, then it says his father was Prince Johnson Jr. born in 1870 married to Hattie Johnson, then it says his father was Prince Johnson born in 1857 married to Sarah A. Johnson, then it says his father was Prince Johnson born in 1820. So now I'm confused again because we both said different things.

Re: Seeking records of Thomas & Mattie Johnson
Susannah Brooks Dec 8, 2020 1:16 PM (in response to Jaynea Keathley)1 person found this helpfulI tried to find your tree on Ancestry, but could not do so. A problem arises in 1900 when there are several Prince Johnson's living in South Carolina. One is in Hampton Co married to Annie, who I assumed was your family due to location, and the other was married to Hattie and lived in Edgefield Co SC. The locations are too far apart for that time period for one Prince Johnson to have two families. Ages definitely vary in US census records for individuals. If I am interpreting from your statement that you have 3 generations of Prince Johnson, that will not work since it is unlikely that the Prince born in 1857 was the father of the one born in 1870 (only 13 years apart).

Re: Seeking records of Thomas & Mattie Johnson
Susannah Brooks Dec 9, 2020 7:43 PM (in response to Jaynea Keathley)1 person found this helpfulFinally found your tree on Ancestry. I think the problem arises because there are at least 2 Prince Johnsons that are easy to confuse with each other. Look at the 1870 and 1880 Censuses for Prince Johnson born between 1820 & 1825 with his wife Rosetta. They have a son named Prince, who was born about 1856. They are in Beaufort Co. SC. Compare them to Prince and Rosetta in 1880, who are in Hampton Co SC (part of which becomes Allendale Co in 1919). Here their son Prince is listed as being born about 1862.
Unfortunately the 1890 census was destroyed in a fire, so we have to jump to 1900. I believe that the Prince Johnson born 1860, who is living in Lawton Twp, Hampton Co SC, with his wife Annie is the father of Coy. By 1910 Prince Johnson (~1860 still in Lawton Twp)) is remarried to Hattie (according to the census they had been married only 2 years, his 2nd marriage & her first). It says she had given birth to 2 children, both living (one would be the infant in the family & I don't know who the other one is). The problem is where is Coy? There is a 7-8 year gap in children between a 8 year old and the less than 1 year old infant.
In the 1920 Census Coy b. 1906 is listed with Prince (b. 1860) and Hattie in Hampton Co. SC.
I think that you need to eliminate from your tree any Prince or possible spouse who is not in Hampton or later Allendale Counties after 1870; but you need to make the final decision on each person.
