In the Pacific Theater, they were called War Patrol Reports.
USS Permit (SS-178) are located at, https://catalog.archives.gov/search?q=%22uss%20permit%22&f.ancestorNaIds=305243
Permit made 14 War Patrols.
I am not having any luck finding the Muster Rolls for the crews of PERMIT.
This is the link I use for searching for the enlisted muster rolls.
We have not transcribed any of the Permit War Patrol Reports as yet on the Sub Archivists facebook group. If you are interested that site is https://www.facebook.com/groups/273288477364467 .
Cochino does not have any War Patrol Reports or War Diaries as she was commissioned after the end of the war.
The Muster Rolls (enlisted) for Cochino are located at, https://catalog.archives.gov/id/125745152 (some of these pages are in rough shape)
The following is available at Fold3 if you are a member there (it may also be available through Ancestry, under a military records search for Cochino), https://www.fold3.com/search?keywords=cochino&general.title.id=750:WWII+War+Diaries
Hope this helps you get started at least.
Dear Mr. Rozelle,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941 - 1983 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that include the deck logs of the USS Permit (SS-178) from January 1941 through decommissioning on 15 November 1945, and the deck logs of the USS Cochino (SS-345) from its commissioning on 25 August 1945 through May 1949. We also located World War II Action and Operational Reports in the Records of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (Record Group 38) that may include reports submitted by the USS Permit and the USS Cochino. For more information, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at email@example.com.
Photographs of various U.S. Navy activities dating from 1940 to 2007 are in the custody of the National Archives at College Park - Still Picture (RDSS). Please contact RDSS via email at firstname.lastname@example.org to request a search for photographs of specific ships.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2 and RDSS. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
In addition, we located World War II War Diaries, Other Operational Records and Histories, ca. 1/1/1942 - ca. 6/1/1946 in the Record Group 38 that contain histories and reports concerning the World War II activities of the USS Permit and the USS Cochino. These records have been digitized and can be viewed online using the Catalog. Please keep in mind that the Catalog does not always list files in chronological order.
Next, we located U.S. Submarine War Patrol Reports, 1941 - 1945 in Record Group 38 that includes patrol reports for the USS Permit. These records have been digitized and can be viewed online using the Catalog. It does not include patrol reports for the USS Cochin since the submarine did not conduct any wartime patrols.
Further, we searched the website of the Naval History and Heritage Command and located articles about the Permit I (SS-178) and the Cochino (SS-345). And we located several images and other items relating to the USS Permit and the USS Cochino.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
