Land records are kept at the county level, so you will need to look in county court or separate land records for the county or counties where they owned land. If the surname is somewhat unusual for the area where they lived tax records may also be helpful.
Dear Ms. Marking,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
As the previous poster noted, Virginia and Kentucky are state-land states in which property has been distributed by the colony or state rather than the federal government. Therefore we suggest that you contact the Library of Virginia and the Kentucky Land Office to search for colonial and state land grant records as well as other records such as tax lists, church records, and court papers that can help you continue your family genealogy. Also, please review the FamilySearch research wiki for Virginia Land and Property, Virginia Colonial Records, and Kentucky Land and Property.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
