Re: Seeking records of Josette Pembogo family
Susannah Brooks Nov 12, 2020 11:51 AM (in response to Bob L Liles)1 person found this helpfulIt would help if you gave us more information, such as approximate birth or death dates, who her child was (your grandparent), and where she lived.
I found one Josette Pembago, married to John Megah. She was born about 1865 and a member of the Pottawatomie tribe. She and other relatives received federal land in Kansas. Is this the person you are looking for?

1 person found this helpfulDear Mr. Liles,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We suggest that you begin by assembling as much of your family tree as possible, as far back as you can go and see if Josette Pembogo can be located on early census rolls. For an overview on how to begin, please review NARA’s Resources for Genealogists and Native American Heritage as well as the FamilySearch Research wiki for United States Genealogy and Indigenous Peoples of the United States Genealogy.
When embarking on Native American genealogy, please note that the records in the custody of NARA often only detail those living on the reservations or being administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. If an ancestor was Native American and left the reservation or did not have interaction with the United States Government as such, they will not be recorded in NARA’s records and tracing their genealogy may be difficult.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!

Re: Seeking records of Josette Pembogo family
Bob L Liles Nov 14, 2020 4:05 PM (in response to Bob L Liles)I am trying to follow my grandfather's heritage. His name was Joseph Smith Megah, I believe otherwise on his last name.
I believe it to be "Mejah", not "Megah". His mother was Josette Pembogo. I am unsure of his father's actual last name.
My grand pa was born in 1908 I believe, in Pottawatomie County near Asher or Konowa. I have three grown cousins with the last name Megah. It is very important to them.
Kind of illiterate about how or what to do. I do know my tribal members can locate almost anything about our families and I am thankful they can.

Susannah Brooks Nov 15, 2020 2:16 PM (in response to Bob L Liles)1 person found this helpful1919 Indian census of Pottawatomie tribe
There are several other Indian censuses for this family available on familysearch.org (free research site, just sign up for a username and password).
There are additional Indian census rolls on Ancestry.com (paid research site).
In the 1937 census it states that John Mega, age 66, died on 7 Mar 1937 from pneumonia. It stated that he was full blood.
The earliest Indian census that I found was 1892
Angeline Megah does not appear in the 1894 or later censuses, so she probably died as an infant
As a very young child, Megah, born about 1831, was probably part of the Indian removal from the Indiana & Chicago area first to Kansas in 1838 and then later (late 1860's - early 1870's) to Oklahoma.
