          Dear Simon N.,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

Eleanor Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 11, 1884.  At that time, births were only sporadically recorded in any type of official public record. Previous searches of local and state public records have not located any official birth certificate or birth record for either Franklin D. or Eleanor Roosevelt. To the best knowledge of the staff of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library (LP-FDR), both Franklin and Eleanor were born at home, FDR at Springwood in Hyde Park, NY, and Eleanor on 38th Street in New York City. If you have additional research questions regarding Mrs. Roosevelt, please contact LP-FDR via email at archives.fdr@nara.gov.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from LP-FDR. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

To conduct your own search of local records, please check for birth records at New York City  Records & Information Services.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
