      Who was Frederick Hockley?

Just in time for Halloween, we’re launching our first Campaign with the Library of Congress Rare Book & Special Collections DivisionSeers, Spiritualists, and the Spirit World: The Experiments of Frederick Hockley!

19th century British Spiritualist  and occult revivalist Frederick Hockley (1808-1885) spent 60+ years researching and experimenting with ways of communicating with “the beyond.” Through a medium (someone thought able to reach across the mystical divide), Hockley attempted to question those inhabiting this other realm. He recorded the answers by hand in several bound volumes, which made their way into the library of Harry Houdini, eventually gifted to the Library of Congress.

These pages have never been transcribed and little is known about Hockley – what can we uncover together about the life of this mysterious figure? Jump in here!

We're celebrating this launch with two virtual events about Hockley and the Houdini collection!

I hope you can join us!  Info on each event from the Rare Book division below:

This Thursday, Oct. 29, Mark Dimunation, Chief of the Rare Book & Special Collections Division will tell the story of Houdini’s remarkable life and his premature end on Halloween 1926. He will also discuss the donation of Houdini’s massive library (nearly 4,000 volumes) on psychic phenomena, Spiritualism, magic, witchcraft, demonology, and evil spirits to the Library of Congress, and the legacy Houdini left behind.

Interested in learning more about Frederick Hockley and his crystal-gazing experiments? Join Amanda Zimmerman, Reference Librarian in the Rare Book and Special Collections Division, for a talk exploring the life of Frederick Hockley who, though a firm believer in Spiritualism (Houdini was the ultimate skeptic), shared Houdini’s unrelenting desire to pursue knowledge that would lead to the “truth” about Spiritualism.
