          Dear Ms. Dickau,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

Records of federal and many pre-statehood territorial courts are in the custody of various National Archives regional facilities. See National Archives Court Records for a geographic list of which federal circuit and district courts as well as territorial courts are covered by which National Archives unit. For more information about federal and territorial courts for a specific area please email the National Archives units listed.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from the various NARA units. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

State and county court records are not held by the National Archives. Various states have different practices concerning their historical court records. They may be at the state archives for the state or they may still be in the custody of the originating court or its successor.

We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
