The project is searchable at http://wjh.us/aef/index.asp .

Re: Seeking records for William B Manning
Grace Yuhasz Oct 22, 2020 7:51 PM (in response to Michael Manning)FamilySearch.org has a collection called United States, World War I, Military Muster Rolls and Rosters, 1916-1939. It has muster rolls for Troop K, 15th Cavalry from roughly Oct. 1912 onward (some troops/companies vary on the start and end date). You will have to register (for free) to view these.
The link below takes you to the first page for Troop K, 15th Cavalry (image 524 of 1740 total). The last page for Troop K is image 1020 of 1740. (There is a page in between each troop/company that says "New Orgn Begins".)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QHJ-13CM-G95D-R?i=523&cat=3378445
The records are grouped by Organization (15th Cav), then Troop/Company name (Troop K), then from the oldest to newest date. You have to go page by page. The beginning page of each muster roll will give the month range it covers, and may also tell the location of the Troop (later years have the info sideways at the “top” of the page).
The last entry for William B. Manning is on the muster roll completed the last day of September 1918. Troop K was at Remount Depot #3, Base Section #7. Muster rolls that I have seen from the actual war years were completed monthly (earlier years covered more than one month). Since Manning died in mid-October, he does not appear on the roll completed at the end of October.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QHJ-13CM-G9YZ-J?i=960&cat=3378445
Go backwards from this page to find Manning in previous months, until you find when he joined or transferred into Troop K. To go page by page, use the white left/right arrows on the left of the screen by the image number. You can also select the “Browse multiple images” button (looks like a bunch of squares on the left side of the page, under the zoom in/out buttons). This will allow you to look at multiple pages at once.
In case you need to look at another unit, this link takes you to the overall search page where you can search for different units. Just use your Find button (CTRL + F on Windows) to search by unit name or number. The names are abbreviated—Cav for Cavalry, Regt for Regiment, etc. At the bottom of the page, you would then need to go to the next page and hit the Find button again.
(The info for Troop K is listed as:
85713803|RG-64|World War I Rosters of enlisted men, 15th Cav, TRP H-M, Reel 15.47, Roll 601, 1916 – 1939 Film 106303481)

Shannon KernerOct 20, 2020 2:41 PM (in response to Michael Manning)
Dear Mr. Manning,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We suggest that you request a copy of his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and individual medical reports for enlisted men of the U.S. Army who were separated from the service after October 1912 and prior to 1958 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. In many cases where personnel records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, proof of service can be provided from other records such as morning reports, payrolls, and military orders, and a certificate of military service will be issued. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.
The information you seek may be contained in his burial case file. Burial case files for 1915 to 1939 are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL). For access to these records, please contact RL-SL via email at stl.archives@nara.gov.
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Records of Cavalry Regiments, 1916 - 1937 in the Records of U.S. Regular Army Mobile Units (Record Group 391) that includes records of the 15th Cavalry Regiment. For access to these files, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RL-SL & RDT2. Also, the NPRC is currently only servicing emergency requests associated with medical treatments, burials, homeless veterans, VA Home loan guarantees, and employment opportunities. If this is urgent, please see Emergency Requests and Deadlines. We apologize for any inconvenience.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
