Dear Mr. Dorr,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We suggest that you contact the South Carolina Department of Archives & History to request a search for the death certificate of George Washington Dorr which would give you his birth location and possibly the names of his parents. We also suggest that you request an additional search for any land records, business records, probate records, voting rolls, or court records that may give information about his locale over time, or when he may have emigrated into South Carolina. You also may wish to search the FamilySearch index for South Carolina, State and Territorial Censuses, 1829-1920 as well as review the FamilySearch Research Wiki for Anderson County, South Carolina Genealogy.
If you determine that he was born in Ireland, we suggest that you consult Irish Genealogy, a website dedicated to Irish genealogy research that is officially supported by Ireland’s Department of Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht. They have a variety of church and civil records available for online use and may be a good resource for any passenger lists departing from Irish ports during the early 1800s. We suggest that you review the NARA publication on Immigration Records, as well as the FamilySearch Research wiki for Irish Emigration & Immigration.
If you determine that he was born in New Hampshire, we suggest that you search the New Hampshire, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records, 1636-1947 FamilySearch index and request a birth record search from the New Hampshire Vital Records State Department of Health. In addition, the FamilySeach research wiki for New Hampshire Vital Records may be helpful.
Lastly, we searched online and located several articles and other publications that might be of relevance to your research. They include:
- Indentured Servants In The US | History Detectives
- The White Indented Servants of South Carolina
- The Columbia SC Irish Memorial
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
