Seeking military records of George Wafer

    Lawrence Lindsey Newbie

I am trying to find military records on my deceased cousin who served as an enlisted man in the Army during WWI. His name is George Wafer.

          Mr. Lindsey,

Was your cousin from Chicago, ILL if so then here is some information. These are outgoing and returning lists. Please copy and paste link into your web browser it also has additional information. Also the 1940 census that was too large of a file to upload stated that he was a Guard for the State Penitentiary.

Sir thank you so much for your efforts, but I did not give you enough information.

The George Wafer serving in WW1 was born in Homer Louisiana not Chicago.

              Can you try again?

                  Hello Sir,

Dose this individual seem correct. If this is the correct individual you can see from the WW1 draft registers card that he was previously in the Louisiana State Guard for three years.

Wow I thought that was him, but it was not. George Wafer was African American. I am told he died in the 1980's at 99 years old. Can you try again or do you need more information?

HI Lawrence, I found the documents below on Familysearch.org. One from Louisiana WWI service records.  The place of birth is Homer LA, and the year of birth seems about right if he died in the 1980s at 99 years of age. There was also an index card from the Veteran's Adminstration, which appears to be for the same individual. Hope this is of some help. joan

                      Dear Mr. Lindsey,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We suggest that you request a copy of his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and individual medical reports for enlisted men of the U.S. Army who were separated from the service after October 1912 and prior to 1958 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. In many cases where personnel records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, proof of service can be provided from other records such as morning reports, payrolls, and military orders, and a certificate of military service will be issued. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002. If there is any information requested by the form which you do not know, such as his social security number or his date of separation, you may leave it blank. Under “CHECK THE ITEM(S) YOU ARE REQUESTING” check “Other” and write that you want his entire fire. Under “Purpose” check “Genealogy.” For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NPRC was closed from March 23 through June 23, 2020. As of June 24, the NPRC entered into Phase One of a gradual reopening process. The center is currently only servicing emergency requests associated with medical treatments, burials, homeless veterans, VA Home loan guarantees, and employment opportunities. If this is urgent, please see Emergency Requests and Deadlines. If this is not an emergency, you may still mail the request now but please note that it will take quite some time until NPRC can respond. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Also, we searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series titled Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 in the Records of the Selective Service System (World War I) (Record Group 163) that includes a card for JG Wafer, who was an African American born in Homer, Louisiana, which may be a match for the George Wafer you are researching. It is not uncommon for people from this time period to go by several variant names or to use initials, even on official documents. We are attaching a copy to the end of our reply.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
