Re: Seeking uncle's discharge papers from US Army

The dates for archival and non-archival are within the 62 years of age. You can request his military records just put down on the SF-180 form listed under "other" and reason then check mark genealogy. I suggest doing the long form and fill out as much information as possible. Right now the NPRC in St. Louis is only processing emergency requests for burial, education, and home loan verification. You will have to wait until they resume normal operations.
Thanks,
Elliot Schneider

1 person found this helpfulDear Ms. Warnick,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We suggest that you request a copy of his Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). OMPFs and individual medical reports for enlisted men of the U.S. Army who were separated from the service after October 1912 and prior to 1958 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. As they are more than 62 years from the date of separation, they are considered Archival and are accessible to the public. In many cases where personnel records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, proof of service can be provided from other records such as morning reports, payrolls, and military orders, and a certificate of military service will be issued. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002. For more information see Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF), Archival Records Requests.
For more information about requesting Military Awards and Decorations, please visit https://www.archives.gov/personnel-records-center/awards-and-decorations#army
Please note that the NPRC is currently only servicing emergency requests associated with medical treatments, burials, homeless veterans, VA Home loan guarantees, and employment opportunities. If this is urgent, please seehttps://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/emergenciesEmergency Requests and Deadlines. We apologize for any inconvenience.
We hope this is helpful.
Sincerely,
Holly Rivet
