Re: Seeking information about great-grandfather
Susannah Brooks Sep 29, 2020 8:25 PM (in response to Melissa Murray)Could you give us his name and where in TN he lived? If his name was a common one, it would help those of us who research to know the name of his wife and/or names of at least some of his children.

Re: Seeking information about great-grandfather
Susannah Brooks Oct 1, 2020 12:38 PM (in response to Melissa Murray)The 1930 Census indicated that Thomas Murray age 39 & Maud age 35 had 8 children at the time.
The census can be found on familysearch.org (a free website, you just need to sign up for a free user name and password)
At the time of the 1920 census they had 4 children. Oather is listed as James A, which makes me think that his middle name was Arthur and the family called him Oather.
During WWI Thomas, like all men 18-roughly 45, had to register for the draft (it did not mean that he served)
Thomas N. Murray died 9 Dec 1956.

Maude Murray lived to the age of 95 & died 19 Mar 1991
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/199572520/maude-murray
Maude was the daughter of James Thorpe (or Tharp, surname varies depending on the record). In 1900 James is listed as a widower, so I am not certain who Maude's mother was.

We suggest that you search the FamilySearch index for Tennessee Births and Christenings, 1828-1939 and/or contact Tennessee State Library and Archives to request a record search for your relatives. In addition, the FamilySearch Research wiki for Tennessee Vital Records may be helpful.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!

Re: Seeking information about great-grandfather
Alice Lane Oct 1, 2020 9:39 PM (in response to Melissa Murray)Hi Melissa,
I found Oather (Arthur Murrary) on findagrave.com
Mother was Mary Tharp.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/98512781/arthur-murray
George Edd Murray
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/199572723/george-edd-murray
The 1940 Census shows Maud Murray as a widow with three more children
making the total 11...so Thomas Murray would have to have died
sometime between 1937 and 1940

Re: Seeking information about great-grandfather
Sabine Gorgas Oct 2, 2020 12:58 AM (in response to Melissa Murray)Hi Melissa,
It looks that this is your Thomas Murray
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/96077814/thomas-newton-murray
His parents Thomas N. Murray and Martha J. Troy got married on 26 January 1888 in Marion County, TN.
There is just one problem, that in accordance to his death certificate Thomas was married with Jessie Sexton Murray. So did he and Maude had a divorce or it was just a wrong report?
This is a tree on ancestry that might be of interest for you:

Maybe it helps.

Re: Seeking information about great-grandfather
Melissa Murray Oct 2, 2020 1:23 PM (in response to Sabine Gorgas)I'm not sure if He and Maud divorced. So it's possible, my oldest brother said he remembers one of our grandfather's brothers who was named Billy or Bill , maybe he could be a child from the second marriage
