Seeking information on contract freighter, Robert Flesher

Hello, I'm seeking information on my GG-grandfather, Robert B Flesher, who was born in 1850 in Illinois, resided in Missouri; Indian Territory/Oklahoma; and Lamar CO. He transported freight between Independence, MO & Deadwood, SD regularly in 1870s/1880s. Family oral history says he was a freighter at the Battle of the Little Bighorn and saw the note sent by WW Cooke to Benteen "Come on. Big Village. Be quick. Bring Packs. P. S. Bring Packs." We don't believe he was in the Army but worked as a contract freighter/pack train/wagon train. Are there any possible records of his service?
