Here is some information below. Please also see the History of the 2nd Texas Cavalry. Copy and paste into your web browser. You may also want to reach out to the Texas State Archives.
Hope this helps,
FYI, the second link is for the wrong 2nd Texas Cavalry.
There were two different 2nd Texas Cavalries. You linked a description of the Confederate one. He's researching the Union one.
Macario Herrera (sometimes listed as Herrero) served in Co E of the 2nd Texas Cavalry. His service records are on Fold3.com (a paid site, but you may be about to get a brief trial subscription). https://www.fold3.com/image/259936569?terms=macario,272,herrera
Dear Mr. Carreño,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the American Civil War in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that includes the service record for Herrera, Macario - Age 24, Year: 1864 - Second Cavalry. This file has been digitized and is available online using the Catalog.
We also located the Organization Index to Pension Files of Veterans Who Served Between 1861 and 1900 in the Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs (Record Group 15) that includes an index card for him using the variant spelling Mercario for his first name. We are attaching a copy of the card to the end of our reply. To order his full pension file, please fill out a NATF Form 85 and mail the completed form to the address listed on the form. Please print out and attach to your order a copy of the pension index card that we provided.
Additionally, we located Regimental and Company Books of Civil War Volunteer Union Organizations, 1861 - 1867 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that includes the Company Book of the 2nd Texas Cavalry Regiment, but the company books are only for companies A through C and do not anything for Company E. There may be additional record series with information about his regiment. Should you be interested in researching his regiment as a whole, please review our blog post Records Relating to Civil War Units. For more information, please email the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) at Archives1reference@nara.gov.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT1. Also, NARA has suspended reproduction and digitization services until further notice due to COVID-19. Orders will not be serviced until operations can resume safely. Once operations resume, document reproduction requests will be filled in the order in which they were received. We apologize for any inconvenience.
In addition to the Texas State Library and Archives recommended by Mr. Schneider, we suggest that you contact the Texas Heritage Museum Historical Research Center at Hill College, Texas.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
