We suggest that you contact the NYC Department of Health to request a death record search for your uncle as well as search the United States Social Security Death Index for his SSN.
Most cities and counties have yearly directories for residents which can be searched by name. We suggest you consult the FamilySearch Research wiki on New York Directories for these resources. You may wish to search Ancestry.com for these directories as well. There may be a fee for using Ancestry. Instead, check for access at your local library as many library systems subscribe to these sites, making them free for their patrons.
