Re: Seeking records of a cargo ship called the Milliam
Dawn Uzdale Sep 17, 2020 6:09 AM (in response to Alice Lane)Hi Alice,
Thank you for checking. I am afraid the name was given to me by my grandmother who has long since passed. She gave me the information that she knew about her parents; when and how they came to the US and I wrote it down. She said that her father, George Mahovlich could not afford passage on a passenger ship so he came here from Croatia on a cattle boat called the Milliam. And then she said like William only with an M. She said that they docked in Baltimore. My grandma at the time was probably in her late 50s. She had a sound mind and was generally reliable with her information. I am sure that is how it was told to her but I never knew George and how likely information that he passed on would be accurate. He is my only great grandparent that I can't account for.

Re: Seeking records of a cargo ship called the Milliam
Dawn Uzdale Sep 17, 2020 12:53 PM (in response to Alice Lane)Hi Alice,
Yes, those are my great grandparents. I do have immigration records for Rose. They did not come together and were married here. I have records of George after he arrived in Elk Co. PA. I know personally all my great aunts and uncles and cousins. But how George got here is a question. Records that are sometimes on passenger lists, such as closest relative, parent or place of origin would be nice to find. I don't know if they documented this type of information if you arrived on a cattle boat. I don't know if he arrived legally and was documented. Maybe not?

Dear Ms. Uzdale,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Inward Foreign Manifests for the Port of Baltimore, 1789 - 1907 and the Records of Entrances and Clearances, 7/11/1783 - 12/31/1934 in the Records of the U.S. Customs Service (Record Group 36) that may include records of the Ship Milliam docking in Baltimore from Europe in the early 1900s. For access to these records, please contact the National Archives at Philadelphia (RE-PA) via email at philadelphia.archives@nara.gov.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RE-PA. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Dawn Uzdale Sep 18, 2020 6:12 AM (in response to Alice Lane)I do appreciate that but I am specifically looking to answer the question --By what means did George Mahovlich reach the USA?
I have a much more complete tree than the one on familysearch.

Alice Lane Sep 18, 2020 9:39 AM (in response to Dawn Uzdale)Good Morning Dawn,
I have had people interact with me through family trees and I have done the same,
epecially on Ancestry. I thought you might want to do the same...sometimes other family
members have the answers that you are seeking. Worked for me several times.
Just a thought.
