Dear Mr. Reed,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
Most 1980s era records of the US Navy that have been retained are still in US Navy custody. Please note that the majority of records of any federal agency are scheduled as temporary, and are disposed of after their administrative use. In particular, Navy training records are normally scheduled as temporary, and records relating to lower level organizations are often temporary or, if retained, incorporated into higher level organizational records. Please contact the Department of the Navy’s record officers at Maurice King, Department of Defense, Department of the Navy,1000 Navy Pentagon, 5E170 Washington DC 22350 or email@example.com for information regarding Naval Recruit Training Center records from 1980.
The National Archives may have muster rolls for the Naval Recruit Training Center in the record series Personnel Diaries and Muster Rolls, 1/1/1972 - 1/31/1983 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24). Students and permanent staff would be listed separately, but the lists would be for the entire training center and would not be arranged by individual training companies. Also, due to the Navy’s use of social security numbers as service numbers during this time period, these records must be requested under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to allow for the records to be reviewed and, if necessary, redacted prior to release. For more information, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at Archives2reference@nara.gov.
We hope this information is helpful.
