To begin your research, we suggest that you review the State of California’s Native American Heritage Commission website on California Indian History. Since the National Archives only has custody of records created by the federal government that document tribal nations administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, please reach out to NARA if you need to request records for a specific tribe or band.

Try the LA county library online records for primary. Look at Madley, Trafzer, Phillips, Heizer and Forbes for secondary. There have been a number of libraries and academic institutions that have taken up digitizing and transcribing archival docs dealing with the topic in the last 10 years and have made them available online.
