Re: Seeking information on Margaret Cadle in 1920 Census
Susannah Brooks Aug 27, 2020 5:07 PM (in response to Bonnie Look Thompson)1 person found this helpfulI found two places that have the records for St. Mary's Orphans Asylum in St. Louis MO.
The Family History Library in Salt Lake City UT has microfilm of the records, which have not yet been digitized
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/760647?availability=Family%20History%20Library
The following is from a website listing St. Louis Orphanages https://stlouis.genealogyvillage.com/greenwood.htm
(I don't know how to get rid of the highlighting)
St. Mary’s Orphanage was formally established in 1843. However, records show that an asylum under the supervision of the Daughters of Charity had been in existence since 1831. St. Mary’s was a home for orphaned girls ages five to 14. Opened first in a home donated by Mrs. Ann Biddle, there was no regard for race or religion. St. Mary’s Orphanage ceased operations in 1952, but the building continues in use today as St. Mary’s Special School.
The extant records of St. Mary's Orphanage date from 1843 to 1900. The records include the name, date of entry, why the child was an orphan, the date of departure and where the child went.

The Daughters of Charity Archives are now firmly settled in Emmitsburg and so wanted to give you updated contact information. Records of St. Louis orphanages run by the Daughters of Charity (St. Mary’s, St. Philomena’s, and Guardian Angel) are now housed at the Daughters of Charity Province of St. Louise Archives in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Re: Seeking information on Margaret Cadle in 1920 Census
Grace Yuhasz Aug 28, 2020 8:15 AM (in response to Bonnie Look Thompson)1 person found this helpfulMargaret Cadle is on ED 10-183, p. 6B, line 84 of
Missouri
St Louis (Independent City)
St Louis Ward 27
District 0563
I first went to SteveMorse.org and used the "Finding Transcribed ED Descriptions for 1920 in One Step" tool. At the very top, I chose 1920. Then I selected Missouri, St. Louis City, all EDs, and typed in St. Mary's in the Keyword space. This gave me 3 Enumeration Descriptions with the name St. Mary's in it. The orphanage is in ED 563 (and Ward 27).
https://stevemorse.org/ed/ed.php?year=1920&state=MO&keywords=&county=St%20Louis%20city
On the right hand side of Ancestry.com's 1920 Census page, I selected Missouri, Saint Louis (independent city), Township Ward 27, then ED 563.
I found Margaret by searching for the St. Mary's Orphanage pages, then line by line. The reason she didn't come up on Ancestry.com or FamilySearch is there was a transcription error. Both sites give her age as 3 when it was really written 13. The transcriber probably thought the number one was part of the W on the line under Margaret. If you look at the girl on the line above her, you can see how the number 14 was written, with the number 1 in a similar location to Margaret's.
Here is the link to the record on FamilySearch.
