Dear Mr. Damon,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Regimental and Company Books of Civil War Volunteer Union Organizations, 1861 - 1867 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that includes the Regimental and Company Books of the 66th Illinois Infantry Regiment. We also located the series Letters Received, 1863 - 1917 in Record Group 94 that includes Consolidated Military Officer's File of Captain William Burrows, 66th Illinois Infantry Regiment. If the rifle was given to someone in the regiment, it might be mentioned in the records. For access to these records, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
