Dear Mr. Boyle,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Muster Rolls and Personnel Diaries, 1/1941 - 12/1980 in the Records of the U.S. Marine Corps (Record Group 127). This series is indexed by Index to Muster Rolls, 1949 - 1977 in Record Group 127. While some of the Muster Rolls have been digitized and are available online using the Catalog, not all the muster rolls are available online. For assistance with these records, please contact National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at Archives2reference@nara.gov. Please include the specific companies you are interested in.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Thank you for the secondary contact information. I have sent an email to see if they can provide specific instructions on how to search the indexes and other information. My searches either produce information not pertaining to what I need or return with no hits.

Thanks for the CC's, but they only list officers and not enlisted personnel I am seeking. I am well aware of the Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech and have previously provided them with an oral history. A lot of good information is available.

Its really hit or miss with army ww2 unit diaries. I have been researching a lot on my grandfather who served with the 96th Infantry Division on Leyet and Okinawa. For instance during my search the 96th did not have any company level logs or diaries just at the battalion level. But I'm not sure how Marine units were filled.
Hope this helps,
Elliot Schneider

Thanks. Marine infantry units are organized by division, with 3 regiments reporting. In Vietnam each regiment had 4 battalions reporting and each regiment was composed of 4 battalions. The 1st regiment would have A,B, C, and D companies reporting. 2nd regiment would have E,F, G, and H companies reporting. 3rd regiment would have I,J,K and L companies reporting. Each battalion would have a H&S (headquarters & service) company as well as artillery batteries including mortar and cannon detachments. Each company would be served by platoons of infantry as well as Naval Corpsman & Doctors. In my instance I served with 2 regiments, both in 2nd battalions and H&S companies, and Communications platoons. So, I am basically searching for Marines who served in the communications platoon. Each month hundreds of Marines would "rotate" back to the US and hundreds would join in their place. Every month we would lose 1 or 2 and gain 1 or 2, thus the need to find a roster for each month.
Thanks,
Jim
