Re: Seeking arrival & departure records of Vishnu Ganesh Pingle
Susannah Brooks Aug 16, 2020 7:11 PM (in response to Alice Lane)The ship arrived and the border crossing took place in 9 Septembert 1911. He was traveling 1st class on the SS Ortenia. I have run into the cards before that say "act of 1924", but the arrivals like this one took place earlier. The only explanation that I have (and it may be wrong) is that the cards were filled out 1924 & later from the earlier original lists.

Excerpt from Wikipedia article....Vishnu was also strongly influenced by the history of the American War of Independence. In 1911, Pingle left Ausa for the United States. It is said that he kept the news of his impending departure from his family and only told his elder brother Keshavrao of his plans at the railway station. He reached America via Hong Kong, and enrolled as a student of mechanical engineering at the University of Washington in 1912.[
But this manifest states his father paid for his passage to the United States https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QK3R-771S
Also, near the bottom of the Wiki article is this........Pingle's granddaughter Rajani Patil is a politician. She has served as a Member of the Indian Parliament. {I did not find mention of a wife anywhere..was Pingle married?)

Dear H. W.,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located a series titled Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at Seattle, WA, 1890--1957. (M1383) in the Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (Record Group 85) that may contain records of Vishnu Ganesh Pingle. For assistance with and access to the records, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at archives1reference@nara.gov.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT1. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
You may wish to search Ancestry.com for the digitized M1383. There may be a fee for using Ancestry. Instead, check at your local library. Many library systems subscribe to these sites, making them free for their patrons.
