Re: German Help!
Joseph Armstrong Aug 17, 2020 1:55 AM (in response to Henry Rosenberg)1 person found this helpfulHi Henry,
Thank you for posting to the History Hub.
Actually the letter is written in German Sutterlin. The letter is dated July 2, 1874. It is addressed to My Dear Fseugon. It references a Miss Ann Dickerson. The letter has two different alphabets old German (Sutterlin) and really old German that pre-dates Sutterlin. The letter is signed by C. Schurz with little angel greetings.
I'll try to decipher for you.

Sabine Gorgas Aug 17, 2020 6:02 PM (in response to Henry Rosenberg)2 people found this helpfulHi Henry,
I transcribed it for you. German is my native language. There was only one one word I could not make sense out of it, but maybe I will find it still out.
I am not registered yet with LOC so I copied it in here:
Narragausett, 2. Juli 1874
vorstellen. Mit freundlichem Gruß
Ihr C. Schurz
Carl writes here to his sister-in-law. He writes that Anna Dickinson will deliver this letter to her. He describes Anna as a famous speaker and supporter of the women's rights in the United States. He is full of commendations and praises Miss Dickinsons Charakter. He writes his sister-in-law she will make a pleasant and enjoyable aquaintance, and since Miss Dickinson would spent some time Berlin, he asked her to introduce Miss Dickinson to her sisters there.
