2 people found this helpfulDear Mr. Ackerman,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Awards Citations Files, 1941 - 1970 in the General Records of the Department of the Navy (Record Group 428) that may include the Medal of Honor case file for Lt. Mitchell. For access to the files, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.
We also located the Congressional Medal of Honor Awards Files, 1945 - 1952 in the President's Secretary's Files (Truman Administration) (HST-PSF) that may include a copy of the Medal of Honor case file for Lt. Mitchell. For access to the files, please contact the Harry S. Truman Library (LP-HST) via email at truman.reference@nara.gov.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2 and LP-HST. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
A copy of the Medal of Honor Citation for Lt. Mitchell is available online via the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Cory Ackerman Aug 6, 2020 11:12 AM (in response to Thomas Richardson)Thank you so much Mr. Richardson!
I really appreciate your time and energy on this. If you don't mind elaborating, what I'm wondering is if I want to take a crack at finding files like these myself where should I start my online searches?

Thank you for posting your follow-up request on History Hub!
To begin, you need to determine what agency or organization produced the records you seek. If the records are produced by the Federal government, then we suggest reviewing NARA’s Research Our Records:Getting Started Overview web pages.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

Erin Perkins Aug 20, 2020 12:38 PM (in response to Cory Ackerman)Hi Cory,
I had a similar search and I suggest starting with the Truman Library, if you know for sure that he received his award in 1950. Truman would have presented it to him and they should have at least some records for it. The archivists there will be able to find what they have for you. There is usually documentation that has to be completed before the award is granted, and that is different than the official citation that you can find on the MofH website listed above.
