Dear Mr. Harmon,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives catalog and located the Compiled Service Records of Soldiers Who Served in the American Army During the Revolutionary War, 1894 - ca. 1912 in the War Department Collection of Revolutionary War Records (Record Group 93) that includes a digitized file unit for Samuel Trivett who served in the 2nd Virginia Regiment. We also located the Case Files of Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Applications Based on Revolutionary War Service, ca. 1800 - ca. 1912 in the Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs (Record Group 15) that may include an application by his widow for a pension. To order a pension file, please fill out NATF Form 85 and mail the completed form to the address listed on the form. For more information see Requesting Copies of Older (pre-WWI) Military Service Records.
Please note that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has suspended reproduction and digitization services until further notice due to COVID-19. Orders will not be serviced until operations can resume safely. Once operations resume, document reproduction requests will be filled in the order in which they were received. We apologize for any inconvenience.
In addition, we located Revolutionary War Rolls in Record Group 93 that may include records and muster rolls of the 2nd Virginia. For more information about these records and other Revolutionary War-era records in National Archives custody, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at Archives1reference@nara.gov.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT1. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
Please contact the Library of Virginia for information regarding Virginia militia. You also may wish to review Research Notes Number 8: Virginia Revolutionary War Records and Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War : McAllister's Data.
We located a brief summary of the 2nd Virginia Regiment’s service in The Continental Army by Robert K. Wright, Jr., bottom of page 283. There also are multiple published books about the Revolutionary War that provide accounts of the various campaigns in which the 2nd Virginia Regiment participated.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research.
