My great aunt won every bet (14) at the horse race at the fair held in NW Washington, DC. around 1890. I went back in time to give her money. The time was just before Margaret Dozier's brother (Candler or Chandler) bought Pembroke Chemical Company or Pennington (?) Chemical Company in Atlanta, Georgia. The company later became Coca-Cola in 1913/1914. The date is important when the fair took place. They lived in Washington,DC-French Quarter and I visited the low income building at 5125 Upton. I need to locate the date and any information about what happened. Apparently, women could not own assets or money. When did they change the law about women and children having the right to own property in Washington DC?
Minor children cannot own property today without a guardian or trustee. Single women have been able to own property based on English law, basically since the founding of this country. When a woman married in most states and the District of Columbia she lost her right to ownership. In 1869 the US Congress gave married women in the District of Columbia the right to own, sell, etc property separate from their husband. See chapter XXIII in the attached
