Re: Seeking military records for Frank Miller
Joseph Armstrong Jul 26, 2020 2:29 AM (in response to Deborah Miller)Hi Deborah,
Thank you for posting to the History Hub. The form you would need to start tracing Frank W Miller from his last unit back to Normandy would be WD AGO Form 53 Enlisted Record and Report of Separation Honorable Discharge. The WD stands for War Department and the AGO stands for Adjutant General's Office. You can review how to obtain this form, from this web site: https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/standard-form-180.html
Good luck on your search.
Joe

Re: Seeking military records for Frank Miller
Deborah Miller Jul 28, 2020 3:03 PM (in response to Joseph Armstrong)Thank you, Joe. I have filled out and printed the form, but the instructions say to send it to the MPRC in St Louis. I requested my Dad's records from them a year ago and sent payment. They responded that they could not send his records because of the 1963 fire there. Should I send a request to them again? They appear to be responding only to emergency requests for veterans' records at this time.

Elliot Schneider Jul 26, 2020 4:20 PM (in response to Deborah Miller)Deborah,
Did you know he is buried at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
I looked at the VA grave locater and they don't give much on unit information. Except for his rank TSgt. Tried hoping for at least unit information. Most WW2 unit records information is located at College Park, Maryland. Archives2reference@nara.gov. Can also try Eisenhower.library@nara.gov they have a lot of WW2 unit records available as well.
Thanks,
Elliot Schneider

Re: Seeking military records for Frank Miller
Deborah Miller Jul 28, 2020 2:59 PM (in response to Elliot Schneider)Thank you, Elliot. I know his Jefferson Barracks burial information; my Mom & sister & I buried him there. What I can't figure out is that whether I try to fill out a Request Pertaining to Military Records (Standard Form 180) online or to mail it somewhere, it always defaults to the MPRC in St Louis. I sent a request and payment to them a year ago and they replied that the records were not available because of the 1963 fire. Why should I send to them again?
Best,
Debbie

Elliot Schneider Jul 29, 2020 11:23 AM (in response to Deborah Miller)Deborah,
Try contacting the County or State Veterans service office. They recorded discharge papers because most states offered bonuses for service and other state benefits. Try contacting the state he resided after service or when he came home.
Thanks,
Elliot Schneider

Re: Seeking military records for Frank Miller
Joseph Armstrong Jul 29, 2020 2:11 AM (in response to Deborah Miller)Hi Debra,
The records you are seeking were destroyed in the 1973 fire at St. Louis. You may now have to try another route. Records H-Z are available. You should try this site
