Re: Seeking Immigration Records of Morris Glick
Susannah Brooks Jul 25, 2020 5:12 AM (in response to Rochelle Form)Since there are quite a few Morris Glicks, could you give us his birth year? Also do you know that his ship arrived in Philadelphia or is that just where he lived upon arrival?

Rochelle Form Jul 26, 2020 1:52 PM (in response to Susannah Brooks)Susannah, thank you so much for getting back to me.
The following information is what I have on Morris Glick:
The birth year was 1892. (I have birth date as 7/15/1892.)
Arrival - 1904 (USA) I believe it was Philadelphia, PA, however, not certain. He did reside in Phila.
Original Naturalization document has 1/8/1917.
I cannot find U S. Passenger List, declaration of intention and petition for naturalization.
Thanking you in advance for your help.

Re: Seeking Immigration Records of Morris Glick
Susannah Brooks Jul 28, 2020 1:58 PM (in response to Rochelle Form)Does the naturalization document state the court that issued it?
I think that I may have found the arrival of the family. If you know any of the family members' Yiddish names, it would help to prove or disprove whether this is the correct family.

Rochelle Form Jul 30, 2020 1:53 AM (in response to Susannah Brooks)Susannah: Thanks for getting back to me.
In answer to your question, the naturalization document has on the bottom right ASSISTANT CLERK,
COURT OF QUARTER SESSIONS
PHILADELPHIA, PA
It seems like the info you sent me does not match up. My grandfather's parents names were Israel and Dora Glick.
Is there anything else I can provide you? Thank you!

Re: Seeking Immigration Records of Morris Glick
Susannah Brooks Jul 30, 2020 12:06 PM (in response to Rochelle Form)Do you know the names of Morris' siblings, other than Louis that appears in a census with Morris and his parents? This may not be the right family, but one cannot rule out an immigration record, especially for Jewish families from eastern Europe, based on names. The lists were made up when the person either purchased their ticket or when they boarded the ship, so they did not have English names. The names they used would have been their Yiddish name, Russian (Polish, Latvian, etc) name, or their Hebrew name.
The following information is from the Philadelphia Court of Quarter Sessions, so that you can follow up to obtain the petition and possibly declaration of intention:
21.18 Petitions for Naturalization 1800-1897, 1914-1930
42 cu.ft., 64 volumes, index
Petitions list name of petitioner, country of origin, former allegiance renounced, date naturalization granted, name of voucher; copy of Declaration of Intention (see entry immediately above), if made, filed with Petition includes variously petitioner's name, age, address, place of origin (normally province or county only); petitions 1913-1930 add information concerning petitioner's birth, physical description, family, passage, residence and occupation in the United States
For similar records, see Common Pleas Court Petitions for Naturalizations;
District Court Petitions for Naturalizations;
Mayor's Court Petitions for Naturalizations and
Recorder's Court Petitions for Naturalizations.

Darlene Naparstek Jul 30, 2020 6:40 PM (in response to Rochelle Form)Your Morris is not the same one As mine. My Morris did have a wife named Sarah, but none of the children’s names or date of births are close.

translating a Hebrew/Yiddish name, civil name of home country, then to the name used in the US is not always a straight translation. The above sites are ones I’ve used for my husband’s family. Wikipedia has come through a few times when other sources didn’t.

Alice Lane Jul 29, 2020 10:02 AM (in response to Darlene Naparstek)Thanks Darlene, it's good to have any information, but I must respond that all names are unique in some way. In my family tree I have names Marcellus, Lane, Price, Bartlett
On newspapers.done come when I enter Bartlett, I get pears, when I enter Marcellus, I get shale, You can imagine what I get with the other two. Ancestry search is never easy and here is always some little mystery to drive you crazy.
Have a great day.

Re: Seeking Immigration Records of Morris Glick
Darlene Naparstek Jul 30, 2020 6:33 PM (in response to Alice Lane)That’s why it is just a starting point. I have individuals with Moische on their ship manifest that go by names besides Morris, Name changes were so common pre 1920 with few actually being documented. Guess it is part of the genealogy puzzle that keeps us interested.

Re: Seeking Immigration Records of Morris Glick
Cara JensenJul 30, 2020 12:55 PM (in response to Rochelle Form)
Dear Ms. Form,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Inward Passenger Lists, 1/1883 - 7/1928 in the Records of the U.S. Customs Service (Record Group 36) that includes passenger lists kept by the Bureau of Customs office in the Port of Philadelphia. For access to these records, please contact the National Archives at Philadelphia (RE-PA) via email at philadelphia.archives@nara.gov.
If you are still having difficulty locating passenger records for Morris Glick, we suggest that you review these Genealogy: Passenger Arrival List Research Tips and not limit your search efforts to the Philadelphia port.
Beginning September 27, 1906, the responsibility for naturalization proceedings was transferred to the Federal courts. For access to the records of Federal courts in Pennsylvania, please contact RE-PA via email at philadelphia.archives@nara.gov and request a search for his naturalization records by including the name of petitioner (including known variants); date of birth; approximate date of entry to the US; approximate date of naturalization; where the individual was residing at the time of naturalization (city/county/state); and country of origin.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RE-PA. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
