Re: Seeking Shawnee Indian heritage from Amanda Walker

Dear Mr. Morgan,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
Since the Shawnee were removed from Ohio by treaty in the 1830s, your grandmother would not have been recorded in the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) records. Unfortunately, the 1830s removal of the Shawnee was not documented. Therefore, even if you could trace her ancestors to that time period, there are no BIA records to prove her heritage. Direct documentation of the Shawnee begins in Kansas, including post-1885 census records from Oklahoma and Missouri. You may wish to browse those records for a reference to your family.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your family research!
