Seeking military records of Richard Richardson

    Mimi Reid Newbie

I am searching records of Private Richardson Richardson to find whom his parents were. He was born in Bedford County, VA in 1756.

          Dear Ms. Reid,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched National Archives Catalog and located the Indexes to Revolutionary War Compiled Military Service Records in the War Department Collection of Revolutionary War Records (Record Group 93) that included an index card for Richard Richardson of Virginia. We are attaching a copy of the index card to the end of our reply.  The index card indicates that there is a compiled service record for him. We also located the Compiled Service Records of Soldiers Who Served in the American Army During the Revolutionary War in Record Group 93. This file has not been digitized and is not available online. However, please note that these records typically do not list the names of the parents of soldiers.

In addition, we located Case Files of Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Applications Based on Revolutionary War Service, 1800 - 1912 in the Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs (Record Group 15).  Pension files sometimes include additional information about a soldier and his service which is not included in the Compiled Service Record. The pension records are available digitally on Fold3.

To order records that are not digitized, please fill out a NATF Form 86 for the service records and a NATF Form 85 for the pension records and mail the completed forms to the address listed on the form. You also may place your order online using eservices.archives.gov. For more information see Requesting Copies of Older (pre-WWI) Military Service Records.

Please note that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has suspended reproduction and digitization services until further notice due to COVID-19. Orders will not be serviced until operations can resume safely. Once operations resume, document reproduction requests will be filled in the order in which they were received. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Lastly, we located a user generated “Clara Richardson’s Family Tree”on Ancestry.com with information about Richard Richardson, who was born 22 June 1756 in Bedford, Bedford County, Virginia, United States, and died 8 May 1794 in Lexington, Kentucky.   According to the family tree, his parents were Richard Richardson (1725–1775) and Elizabeth Thomas (1732–1782). The family tree traces his ancestry back several generations.

Accessing these Ancestry and Fold3 requires paid subscriptions to these websites.  Some libraries provide free access to their patrons.

You may also wish to contact the Bedford Museum and Genealogical Library and the Library of Virginia for additional assistance.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
