Seeking President Kennedy's letter to the Navy about Operation Dominic

Hello; I'd like to locate a copy of a letter issued by President Kennedy to the US Navy that served in Operation Dominic in 1962. He was thanking them for their service that involved such dangerous work.  In particular, this has to do with the USS Munsee 107-ATF, the ocean tug that assisted in the setting of the targets for the nuclear bomb testing.  This operation took place at Christmas Island. Any news would be appreciated.  I'm trying to get this done for a 78 year old's upcoming birthday.  Thank you.

          Dear C.M. Smith,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum Website and located several files relating to Operation Dominic. Please note that the records have been digitized and may be viewed online. We suggest contacting the reference staff of the John F. Kennedy Library (LP-JFK) at kennedy.library@nara.gov as they might be able to locate the letter you are seeking.

We also searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941 - 1983 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that include the deck log of the USS Munsee (ATF-107) for 1962. Plus, we located 23 file units pertaining to Operation Dominic that may be of interest. For access to these and other pertinent records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.

Please note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from LP-JFK and RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

In addition, we located a report titledOperation Dominc I, 1962prepared by the Defense Nuclear Agency.  The report has been scanned and may be viewed on the website of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

Finally, we would suggest contacting the Navy Awards and Decorations Branch, Navy and Marine Corps Awards Office, Chief of Naval Operations DNS35, 2000 Navy Pentagon, Washington, DC 20350-2000 as it appears you may be looking for a Presidential Unit Citation (PUC). The website is Awards.navy.mil (must use Internet Explorer to access the website).

We hope this information is helpful.  Best of luck with your research!
