Seeking post-operational report of 1920 US Army Transcontinental Motor Convoy

    Newbie

The 1920 US Army Transcontinental Motor Convoy drove from Washington DC to San Diego CA from June-October 1920 along the Bankhead Highway. The convoy commander, Col John F Franklin, prepared a post-convoy report and submitted it to the War Department around Feb 1922. I cannot find any mention of the 1920 convoy in NARA records and am wondering if I'm using the wrong keywords, looking in the wrong area or what. There is a ton of material in NARA on the 1919 convoy which went along the Lincoln Highway, but virtually nothing on the 1920 convoy. Thank you!

          Dear Mr. Peterson,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Correspondence, Reports, Lists, and Other Records , 1918 - 1920 in the Records of the Office of the Quartermaster General (Record Group 92), which includes records of the Motor Transport Corps and may include information relating to the 1920 convoy. For more information about these records, please email National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at Archives2reference@nara.gov.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!

            Mr. Atkinson,

Thank you so much for your reply and suggestions for researching the Motor Transport Corps records at College Park. I did not see that particular collection in my NARA researching.

I have followed up with them per your recommendation, and am hoping a copy of the 1920 Convoy's official report still exists! :-)

            Best regards,

            Dave Peterson

                Dear David,

Have you had any success with your research finding the post report? I found this lead:

Memoranda for Captain J.D. Fauntleroy, Report of Observation of Bankhead Highway Transcontinental Survey, August 25, 1920. Bureau of Public Roads, Fort Worth Office, Texas Highway Department Records, Archives and Information Services Division, Texas State Library and Archives. #2002/101-6

I know that the LOC has historic film reels of the 1919 Lincoln Highway convoy. It is plausible that the Motion Picture Division filmed the 1920 convoy as well and I am very much interested in finding these reels if they exist.

                Greetings,
