Seeking 1870s importation of horses from India

Is there anyone out there that can help me with this?  Finding documented proof of this importation could help save endangered mustangs found around Eureka, Nevada. I think the importation of horses happened between 1872 and 1878. The curly haired horses were obtained by Thomas Dixon (1849-1927) in New Delhi, India from a trader on the old Silk Road and shipped to the United States.  The foals of these horses were released into the wild horse herds near Eureka. Their descendants still exist there today in small numbers. There must be import duty records, shipping manifests, or some written records -- somewhere.
