Dear Mr. Griesel,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
Microfilm Publication M539 is the Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers Who Served in Organizations From the State of Illinois. This publication has been digitized and may be accessed using the National Archives Catalog as part of the record series titled Indexes to the Carded Records of Soldiers Who Served in Volunteer Organizations During the Civil War, 1899 - 1927 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94). We searched the series and located Wright, John H - Unit: 113th Infantry, Company: B - Enlistment Rank: Fifer, Discharge Rank: Pvt. We also located additional index cards for soldiers with that name serving in Illinois units. It is not clear from the index cards if they represent multiple soldiers with the same name and middle initial, or service by the same individual in multiple organizations.
The index card indicates that there should be a Compiled Military Service Record (CMSR) for him in the Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the American Civil War in Record Group 94. Most of the service records in this series have been made available via microfilm and through digitization of the microfilm. Unfortunately, the records for Illinois have not been microfilmed, and the records of the 113th Illinois Infantry have not yet been digitized. There may also be a pension record for him, which has also not yet been digitized.
To order records that have not already been digitized, please fill out a NATF Form 86 for the service records and a NATF Form 85 for the pension records and mail the completed forms to the address listed on the form. You also may place your order online using eservices.archives.gov. For more information see Requesting Copies of Older (pre-WWI) Military Service Records.
Please note that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has suspended reproduction and digitization services until further notice due to COVID-19. Orders will not be serviced until operations can resume safely. Once operations resume, document reproduction requests will be filled in the order in which they were received. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Because he served in an Illinois unit, there may be additional records concerning his service in the custody of the Illinois State Archives.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
