Seeking cables of Richard P Mitchell

    Priscilla Allen Newbie

How do I find State Department cables of Richard P Mitchell who was a US Foreign Service Officer in Kuwait during the late 1950s?

          Dear Ms. Allen,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

According to the 1962 Biographic Register of the Department of State, Richard P. Mitchell was assigned to the consulate in Kuwait City on 21 August 1960.

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Central Decimal Files, 1910 - 1963 and in the General Records of the Department of State (Record Group 59) which may include cables from Kuwait.  The filing manual for the series is here. For more information about these records, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at Archives2reference@nara.gov.

Please note that depending on his place in the hierarchy, his name might not be on any of the cables, even if he wrote a particular cable in whole or in part.  Cables typically went out under the name of the ambassador or the consul even when other staff wrote them.

As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
