          Dear Mr. Durrani,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Central Decimal Files, 1910 - 1963, and Subject-Numeric Files, 2/1/1963 - 1973 in the General Records of the Department of State (Record Group 59) that contain files regarding United States relations with Kenya and may include documents pertaining to Department of State perspectives on Kenyan politics. We also located 9 additional series relating to Kenya. Please email National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) at Archives2reference@nara.gov for more information about these records.

For records about the perspectives and policies of Presidential administrations regarding Kenya, please contact the relevant Presidential library.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT2 and Presidential libraries. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

We located National Intelligence Estimates and Related Reports and Correspondence, 1950 - 1985 in the Records of the Central Intelligence Agency (Record Group 263) that may contain intelligence estimates regarding Kenya, especially as it relates to perceived Soviet activities in Africa. This series has been digitized in full and may be viewed online using the Catalog. Please note that many of the copies of documents in this series have been redacted by

          the Central Intelligence Agency.

We also located Central Foreign Policy Files, created, 7/1/1973 - 12/31/1979, documenting the period ca. 1973 - 12/31/1979 that is searchable online using the National Archives’s Access to Archival Databases (AAD).

Additional online resources for government documents which may cover this topic include the CIA Records Search Tool (CREST) maintained by the Central Intelligence Agency and the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series published and maintained by the Department of State’s Office of the Historian.

For information about locating historical American newspapers that may have reporting on African Socialism and/or Kenya, please review the Library of Congress website Chronicling America. For academic perspectives, you may wish to search online journal services such as JSTOR.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
