Dear Mr. Patrick,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives and located the Muster Rolls of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Other Naval Activities, 1/1/1939 - 1/1/1949 in the Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (Record Group 24) that may include the enlisted personnel of the VP-44 for WWII. These records are now available in digital form and may be viewed online via Ancestry. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Archives has partnered with Ancestry to make the vast majority of their NARA-digitized holdings freely available to the public. Anyone with Internet access may create an account, access NARA records, and use other Ancestry resources, such as their educational offerings and family tree-maker application. For more information see Ancestry’s announcement -- “Free At-Home Education Resources From Ancestry® and Access to Nearly 500M National Archives Records”.
We also located the series World War II Diaries, Other Operational Records and Histories, ca. 1/1/1942-ca. 6/1/1946 in the Records of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (Record Group 38) that includes the digitized file unit titled VPB-44 - War History, VP 44, 12/7/41--10/1/44 & War History, VPB 44, 10/1/44--5/8/45. The war history of VP-44 is for WWII, including the Battle of Midway, and may include listings of the officers.
Lastly, we located information pertaining to VP-44 on the Naval History & Heritage Command (NHHC) website that may be of interest.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
