Seeking offers of presidential appointments by Presidents Pierce or Buchanan

    William Herr Newbie

I am seeking offers of presidential appointments by President Franklin Pierce or President James Buchanan. I am trying to locate information confirming or denying family lore that an ancestor, Norman Eddy, was offered a diplomatic post to the The Hague/Netherlands about 1858.

          Dear Mr. Herr,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series  Applications and Recommendations for Public Office, 1797 - 1901 in the General Records of the Department of State (Record Group 59). Part of the series was microfilmed as National Archives Microfilm Publication M967: Letters of Application and Recommendation During the Administrations of Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan, 1853-1861. According to the index, there are two letters pertaining to Norman Eddy dated November 1 & 6, 1857 on Roll 15. Unfortunately, M967 has not been digitized. For access to the letters, please contact the National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) via email at archives1reference@nara.gov.
