Dear Mr. Bessette,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located 27 record series created by the Springfield Army that include records from the 1880s and may give insight into the design and technical specifications of rifles M1884 rifles, carbines and cadet rifles. These records are in the custody of the National Archives at Boston (RE-BO). Please email RE-BO at boston.archives@nara.gov for more information.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RE-BO. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
In addition, the Springfield Armory National Historic Site may have records or publications that may assist you with your research. Please see their Contact Us page for contact information. We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
