The National Archives only has custody of records created by the federal government that document tribal nations during American nationhood, and even then records are sparse until the mid 19th century. Many of the tribes in the southeast United States were gone by that point, or moved on such as the Creek. Unfortunately, NARA collections do not include many records for eastern tribal areas such as those of St. Simon’s that were largely settled about the time of American independence.
