Re: Seeking list of abbreviations used for WWII morning reports
Danny Thomas Apr 14, 2020 11:54 AM (in response to joan stachnik)Thank you. I have seen this before but I'm looking for a much larger list.
I'm working on morning reports that will be posted to our website. I know most of the abbreviations but I would like to upload a more detailed list so I'm not bombarded with questions for explanations.
Thank you again for your reply

joan stachnik Apr 15, 2020 11:09 AM (in response to Danny Thomas)1 person found this helpfulInteresting project. I've read through quite a number of morning reports while researching my dad's service and don't recall seeing too many abbreviations that weren't on the list or that couldn't be deciphered in context.
But I'm sure there were some company clerks who used other codes or systems, given the conditions that most were working under. I found one other website (see below) that might be of use, but not sure if it has too much more information than you already might have. joan

1 person found this helpfulDear Mr. Thomas,
Thank you for posting your request on the History Hub!
We were able to locate a list of abbreviations for codes routinely used on WWII morning reports from a non-official website. You can access the list here: Morning Report Abbreviations.
Morning reports for Army units (from November 1, 1912 to 1959) and Air Force units (from September 1947 to June 30, 1966) are in the custody of the National Archives at St. Louis (RL-SL). For access to these records, please contact RL-SL via email at stl.archives@nara.gov.
Morning reports for Army units dated 1960-1974 are in the custody of NARA's National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. Please complete a GSA Standard Form 180 and mail it to NARA's National Personnel Records Center, (Military Personnel Records), 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO 63138-1002.
Due to the coronavirus public health emergency, National Archives research rooms and museums are closed to the public until further notice and the National Personnel Records Center is servicing only urgent requests related to homeless veterans, medical emergencies, and funerals which may be faxed to 314-801-0764. We thank you for your patience and look forward to resuming normal operations when the public health emergency has ended.
We hope this helps and good luck with your research!
