Dear Mr. Fitzpatrick,
Thank you for posting your request in History Hub!
The National Archives at New York’s collection of Shipping Articles in the Records of the U.S. Customs Service (Record Group 36) only dates through 1874. There potentially could be copies of the shipping articles included with the vessel log. We searched the National Archives Catalog and located Official Logbooks of Merchant Vessels, 1942 - 1988 in the Records of the U.S. Coast Guard (Record Group 26) that may include a log for the SS Murfreesboro. Please contact the National Archives at New York (RE-NY) via email at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information about these records. Please note that the catastrophic fire on February 26, 1944 that killed many of the crew also may have destroyed any ship records from the voyage.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgment as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RE-NY. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
