Seeking to match a 1942 naval binnacle to the ship it was on

    Lisa Adair Newbie

How do I match a 1942 naval binnacle (I have the serial number) to the ship it was on?  Thank you!

          Dear Ms. Adair,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

The Records of the Bureau of Ships (Record Group 19) may have correspondence with the manufacturer of the binnacle under the file heading  “QM/[name of company]” that may indicate the ships on which that type of binacle was installed. There may also be further information under the file designation for “Compass.” However, unless the binacle was very unique, the type of records necessary to trace individual binacles to individual ships were typically disposed of by the Navy after their initial administrative use. For more information about using Bureau of Ships correspondence, please contact the National Archives at College Park - Textual Reference (RDT2) via email at archives2reference@nara.gov.
