Two of my great-great-grandfathers fought in the Civil war and they belonged to Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) groups in their cities until they died, decades later. Did these GAR groups typically maintain records about their members? Are there local GAR records that would aid in my genealogical research? Thanks.
Dear Ms. Kaczmarek,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
The National Archives does not have records concerning the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) veterans organization. The GAR went extinct in 1956, and was succeeded by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). Please contact the SUVCW’s Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Records Project for information about surviving GAR records.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
