Seeking records of Colonel Spivey & Brigadier General Vanaman

    Stephen Wynn Wayfarer

Colonel Delmar T Spivey was one of the senior American Officer’s Commanding at Stalag Luft lll, Colonel Charles Goodrich and Brigadier General Arthur W Vanaman were both POW's at Stalag Luft lll. The Germans took both Spivey and Vanaman to Berlin in an attempt at conducting clandestine peace negotiations with them. I am looking for any documentation, diaries, or letters, which support this notion.

          Dear Mr. Wynn,

Thank you for posting your question on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog for any records related to “Spivey, Delmar.”  The search results may be found here.  We also searched the Catalog for any records on “Vanaman, Arthur.” The search produced the following results.

According to the book titled “Stalag Luft III” by Charles Messenger, Spivey and Vanaman were taken to Berlin on the orders of SS General Gottlob/Gottlieb Berger.  We searched the National Archives Catalog for any records relating to “Berger, Gottlieb” and “Berger, Gottlob.” The search results can be viewed here and here.

Also, we would also suggest looking into our finding aids for records located in the Records of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) (Record Group 226) available online at: https://www.archives.gov/iwg/declassified-records/rg-226-oss as they may contain some helpful information for your research.  A full list of series located in RG 226 can be found at: https://www.archives.gov/research/military/ww2/oss/series.html .

Please contact the reference unit(s) listed in the records descriptions or NARA website for access to the non-digitized records. Please note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and pursuant to guidance received from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), NARA has adjusted its normal operations to balance the need of completing its mission-critical work while also adhering to the recommended social distancing for the safety of NARA staff. As a result of this re-prioritization of activities, you may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgement as well as a substantive response to your reference request from various NARA units. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience.

Further, we searched CREST (Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Records Search Tool) at https://www.foia.cia.gov/search/ for “Berger, Gottlob,” “Spivey, Delmar,” and “Vanaman, Arthur.” The search results can be viewed here, here, and here.  Information concerning CREST is provided on the CIA web site at https://www.foia.cia.gov/collection/crest-25-year-program-archive.

In addition, it may be of interest to your research to review materials on Gen. Spivey and his experiences during World War II located at the United States Air Force Academy McDermott Library.  For more information, please see the following link.

We hope this information is helpful.  Best of luck with your research!
