Seeking NARA Records on Indian Removal/Trail of Tears

    James Metrailer Newbie

When searching for "Trail of Tears" and "Indian Removal" in the History Hub, the following resources are mentioned in the History Hub:

      • Ancestry.com
      • Fold3.com
      • National Archives Catalog
      • Record Group 75 - Bureau of Indian Affairs (including PI-163)
      • Record Group 123- US Court of Claims
      • Record Group 279 - Indian Court of Claims

      What else can NARA provide?

          Dear Mr. Metrailer,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

Besides the resources you listed already, we suggest that you add the Records of the Office of the Secretary of War (Record Group 107); the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 407); Records of the U.S. Regular Army Mobile Units (Record Group 391); and the Records of the U.S. Continental Commands (Record Group 393) since the Army was often in charge of the removals plus the Office of Indian Affairs operated under the War Department until 1824.

For other sources, we suggest searching footnotes and bibliographies of books and monographs about the Cherokee Trail of Tears and Indian Removal, especially for NARA citations as well as records from other institutions.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
