Dear Ms. Jennings,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Index to War of 1812 Pension Application Files in the Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs (Record Group 15) which includes an index card for Joel Walker, who served under Captain Bibbs in the Virginia Militia. We are attaching a scan of the index card. We also located Indexes to the Carded Records of Soldiers Who Served in Volunteer Organizations During the War of 1812 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94) that contains a two different cards for a Joel Walker who served in the Virginia Militia, one in the 5th Regiment and the other in the 6th Regiment. It is not clear from the index cards if these are both for the same person who served in two different regiments over the course of his career, or cards for two separate persons. We cross referenced with the index cards for Captain Thomas Bibbs and found listings for him under both regiments, so it is possible that the company was assigned to two different regiments over the course of the war. We are attaching scans of the cards for Joel Walker.
These indices indicate that there should be a compiled military service record for Joel Walker in the record series titled Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the War of 1812 in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94). There should also be a pension file and/or land bounty warrant for him in the record series titled War of 1812 Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files in the Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs (Record Group 15). While some of these files in these series have been digitized, the ones for Joel Walker have not yet been digitized.
To order copies of these records, please fill out a NATF Form 86 for the service record and a and a NATF 86 for the pension records and mail it to Archival Operations Washington D.C., Form 86 – Military, National Archives and Records Administration, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20408-0001. You may wish to attach copies of the index cards to your order. You also may place your order online using eservices.archives.gov. For more information see Requesting Copies of Older (pre-WWI) Military Service Records or email National Archives at Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) at email@example.com.
Finally, since Joel Walker served in the Virginia Militia, there may be relevant records at the Library of Virginia. See the Library of Virginia's guide to Soldiers of the War of 1812.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
