Seeking to Verify that Olympian Joseph Stadler was African American

Joseph Stadler (12 JUN 1880 - 25 FEB 1950) was a medalist in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, winning bronze and silver in the standing triple jump and the standing high jump, respectively. While many reference books honor him as one of the first African American Olympic Medal winners, I have not been able to find any records that verify this idea. I have found numerous documents (see below) that list him as white/Caucasian, but none listing him has Black/African American. I would like to find more information, both in order to verify (or not) that he was a pioneering Black athlete and in order to find the source(s) of the misinformation if he was indeed Caucasian.
